Can You Get Microsoft 10 Again if Youve Already Had It

How was Windows 10 originally Activated on the PC? Did it come preinstalled from Factory, was it Upgraded with free or paid Upgrade, or was it a retail copy and license?
For Upgrade when you first upgraded and it activated it assigned a permanent Digital License to the PC in Microsoft Activation Servers so you can reinstall any time and in any way you want as long as you reinstall the licensed version. It should reactivate soon after going online.
Factory installs have the Product Key embedded in BIOS or UEFI firmware and should activate themselves, but you can check for the key by installing ProducKey and look for OEM-BIOS key: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/produkey-x64.zip
Retail keys must be reinserted for reinstalls during install or in Settings.
Run the Activation Troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

Hi Oscar, if you previously had Windows 10 installed and activated on your PC, then you do not have to purchase Windows 10 . . .
Activation problems after a re-install are generally because the incorrect Edition (Home, Pro . . . etc.) is installed and that does not match the Edition that was previously installed on that PC . . .
Open the Settings App
Go to System - About
Does the Edition there match the previous Edition?

Hi dave, im afraid i do not know what version of windows it had on it beforehand, i simply reset it and assumed it would reinstall the same version as before hand, is there any way to see what version was previously on the laptop?

Hi Greg, i believe the laptop came with windows already on it, and didnt require a code to be inputted, i've tried to troubleshoot the activation key, however it says 'troubleshooting has completed, we weren't able to activate windows 10 on this device, please go to the store to purchase a genuine copy of windows 10'. I dont want to buy it again as it costs £120...

Hi Oscar, do you mean you used the built in Windows Reset option rather than clean installing Windows 10?
If so there should be no problem with activation . . .
Open the Settings App
Go to System - About
What version of Windows 10 is reported there, is it Home, Pro or Enterprise?
Then in the Settings App, go to Update and Security - Activation
What is reported under Activation?

Hi Dave, no i tried to reset via tje settings app however it wouldn't work so i reinstalled windows via a USB drive. Ive done this before on my old laptop and i had no problems which is why im am confused as to why it did not work this time.

Can you please check the currently installed Edition of Windows 10, I would say your previous version was Windows 10 Home - does the current Edition match that?

Hi Dave, the laptop has windows 10 Home installed on it, but i have forgotten what it had on before hand, it is an ex-work laptop, so does this mean it may have had enterprise on it or possibly pro? Thanks.

Is there no Windows sticker on the casing, even under the battery, indicating which Edition was previously installed?

Open Start, type: CMD
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator
At the prompt, type: slmgr.vbs /dlv

Most new laptops come preinstalled with Windows 10 Home. If you have Windows 10 Pro installed, you likely have the wrong edition installed.
Click Start > Settings > Update & security > Activation
Does it say Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro?
If it says Windows 10 Pro, you likely have the wrong edition installed.
You will need to reinstall Windows 10 Home.
When you upgraded from a previous version of Windows or receive a new computer preinstalled with Windows 10, what happened is the hardware (your PC) will get a digital entitlement, where a unique signature of the computer will be stored on Microsoft Activation Servers. The Windows 7 or Windows 8 genuine license you were previously running will be exchanged for a diagnostics key.
Anytime you need to reinstall Windows 10 on that machine, just proceed to reinstall Windows 10. It will automatically reactivate. You will prompted to enter a product key a couple times through the installation, click I don't have a key and Do this later.
There is no need to know or get a new key, but if you have issues with Digital Licensing or the Activation Troubleshooter, you can utilize an existing Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product key you already own to reactivate if necessary. or use the reset function in Windows 10.
Go to a working computer, download, create a bootable copy, then perform a clean install.

The Windows logo will appear on screen, this might be here for a while, as long as you see the animating dots, everything should be ok.
Select your Language, Time and Keyboard method then click Next.
Click Install now
Windows 10 setup will prompt you for a product key during installation a couple times. If you originally upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 click the option 'I don't have a key' and 'Do this later' . If you have a Windows 10 product key, you can proceed to enter it.
Setup will also prompt you to select the edition you have a license for - Home or Pro. Please make sure you choose the right edition. If you choose the wrong edition, your only option will be to perform a clean install again.
The copy of Windows 10 you download and upgrade from will correspond with the edition of Windows you have installed, if it does not, this is why you might be experiencing problems activating:
Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Core should install Windows 10 Home
Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro should install Windows 10 Pro
Wait while setup prepares to copy files
Accept the license terms then click Next
Click Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)
NOTE: Sometimes Windows 10 setup can become confused if it see's a thumb drive. You might get a driver missing error or something to that effect. If you do, restart setup, but this time, when you arrive at the following screen, disconnect your thumb drive then go through Custom options. When setup is ready copy files, it will prompt you to reconnect the installation source (your USB).
Select the drive then click New
NOTE: If you have multiple partitions listed, select each one (starting at the bottom), then click delete until there is only a single (one) unallocated drive displayed in the window.
Select the unallocated drive listed, click New, click Apply then OK
This will split the drive into multiple partitions, select the Primary partition then click Next.
NOTE: The System Reserved partition is where recovery files are kept for diagnostics and repairing damaged Windows 10 files; or even reinstall Windows 10.
Wait while Windows installs
When this phase of setup is complete, Windows will automatically restart then reboot into setup again.
Windows is detecting and installing your hardware. After this is complete, Windows will restart one last time.
